NPHC Organizations

The National Pan-Hellenic Council includes nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities, sometimes referred to as the Divine 9. UK NPHC is fortunate to have eight chapters of these divine organizations active on our campus. More information about each chapter is provided in the links below. 


Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Founded December 4, 1906

Epsilon Chi Chapter

Chapter Information: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is the first Black, inter-collegiate Greek-lettered fraternity. It was founded by seven great men on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. The Epsilon Chi Chapter was founded on the campus of the University of Kentucky April 1, 1965.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically black college. Omega Psi Phi was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founders were three Howard University undergraduates, Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, "friendship is essential to the soul," the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Chapter Information: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded Monday, January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 college-educated women. The Mu Epsilon Chapter was chartered Friday May 9, 1975 by 13 dynamic women, and we were the first African American sorority chartered on the University of Kentucky’s campus. We pride ourselves on Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service and work vigorously to implement programs based upon our Five Point Programmatic Thrust (Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement) that will benefit our campus and the surrounding community. We were just recently named Collegiate Chapter of the year within our region and also received a Chapter Scholastic Excellence award from the University of Kentucky for the 2013-2014 school year. We look forward to the new school year and hope to continue to put on award winning programs that will benefit the University of Kentucky’s campus.

Chapter Information: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 9, 1914 on the campus of Howard University; it is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Chartered on September 16, 1980, the Mu Theta chapter promotes the founding principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service among collegiate men on the campus of the University of Kentucky. Our organization is a social and service fraternity, meaning that we emphasize on helping our school community while also catering to our local community. We are an organization who believe in the “inclusive we” for all men who exemplify our principles and want to make a change to campus. Some famous Sigmas include football player Richard Sherman, scientist George Washington Carver, actor Terrence Howard, former president Bill Clinton and revolutionist Huey P. Newton.

Chapter Information: The Indestructible Iota Mu Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered April 23, 1983. Our chapter currently holds 12 Finer Women. We are always striving to make a life style out of our four principles (Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood). Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.

Chapter Information: Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. was founded on September 19, 1963 during the climax of the Civil Rights Movement by twelve distinguished men at Morgan State College. The fraternity was created as a support system for men of color during the turbulent U.S. social climate during the 60's and was founded on 5 strong principles of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity, and brotherhood among men. The Zeta Psi chapter was chartered at the University of Kentucky on March 31st, 2007. We pride ourselves in serving the community, graduating and having a strong brotherhood.
