Joining a fraternity or sorority at the University of Kentucky is a great way to be involved, find a group of friends and mentors, and increase your leadership skills. Our organizations coordinate their recruitment efforts through each governing council - the Interfraternity Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Panhellenic Council, and the United Greek Coalition.
Below is some brief information about the process to join organizations in each council.
The Interfraternity Council organizes a formal recruitment at the start of the Fall and Spring semesters. This process allows interested men to meet and learn more about each fraternity at UK before bids are extended.
In addition to formal recruitment, IFC hosts information sessions and events during K-Week to help chapters and potential members meet one another before the formal process. Information about the recruitment process for Fall 2016 can be found at the IFC website by clicking here.
You can find the IFC eligibility requirements here.
The Panhellenic Council hosts formal recruitment for the 14 National Panhellenic Conference sororities at the University of Kentucky each August. The formal recruitment process is a mutually selective process - potential members and chapters are looking to find their best fit by getting to know one another better during each round of recruitment.
Sorority Recruitment 2016 will be held from August 13 - August 21, 2016. Interested women must register for recruitment. You can find information about recruitment here and pay the registration fee here. Registration is $125 before July 15th, $175 after July 15th, and $200 after August 1st.
Full details about the recruitment process can be found in several places. First, be sure to check out the Panhellenic Council website here. Additionally, information sessions are also done each summer during seeblueU that cover general information about Fraternity & Sorority Life, the Panhellenic recruitment process, and how to register. Finally, the Panhellenic Council produces and information booklet for potential members and for parents. Each first-year woman attending the University of Kentucky receives this booklet in the mail. If you are not a first-year student, and would like a hard copy of the booklet you may pick one up in Patterson Office Tower room 575 or complete the request form here.
Informal Recruitment & Continuous Open Bidding
Some Panhellenic chapters will host an informal recruitment after the formal recruitment period in the Fall and Spring terms. This process, known as Continuous Open Bidding (COB), is less structured and coordinated by each chapter individually. Panhellenic hosts an Open House for women interested in COB each September and January. You may register your interest in COB here.
National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and sororities take new members through a process called Membership Intake. This process is organized by each chapter individually, but includes selection of candidates, education about the organization, and ends with initiation and full membership.
NPHC hosts NPHC 101 each semester to help interested students learn more about each chapter, meet the members, and ask any questions that they may have about the intake process. NPHC 101 is mandatory for any student wishing to join in that semester. NPHC 101 will be hosted on February 3 for the Spring 2016 semester.
The United Greek Coalition is a governing body for special-interest fraternities and sororities and does not coordinate a formal recruitment process for its member chapters. Each organization coordinates recruitment on their own schedule, which is usually early in the semester.
UGC hosts an Open House program at the start of each semester. More information about Open House is available on the Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Calendar.
